National Geographic Society has launched National Geographic Unique Lodges of the World, a curated collection of boutique hotels located in remarkable settings across the globe. Each lodge is chosen for its clear commitment to sustainability, authenticity and high standards of hospitality. After a rigorous evaluation process, selected properties deliver exceptional guest experiences while helping protect cultural and natural heritage and promoting responsible tourism.
Selection criteria include:
- The Property — The design and character are distinct and authentic, offering guests a strong sense of place by highlighting the surrounding landscape and local cultural traditions.
- Guest Experience and Quality of Service — Visitors receive excellent service and inspiring experiences, from meaningful interactions with local people to wildlife encounters guided by experienced naturalists.
- Sustainable Tourism Best Practices — Each lodge demonstrates concrete conservation efforts and environmentally responsible operations, supports the preservation of cultural heritage, and provides measurable benefits to nearby communities.
National Geographic sent specialists to every candidate site to review operations, speak with staff at all levels, assess the lodge’s environmental and social impact, and confirm that the strict criteria were met. The inaugural collection features 24 lodges across six continents, representing a range of landscapes and cultural settings and offering travelers distinctive, responsibly managed places to stay.
By combining authentic design, high-quality service and proven sustainability practices, these lodges aim to create memorable travel experiences that respect and reinforce the places and people they touch. Guests can expect thoughtfully crafted programs and activities that deepen understanding of local heritage and ecosystems while contributing to long-term conservation and community wellbeing.
