Music and Culture Highlights in the 2024 European Capital of Culture

The prestigious title of European Capital of Culture, awarded by the European Commission since 1985, was granted to Bad Ischl and the Salzkammergut (the Salzburg Lake District) for 2024. Once a favored summer retreat of members of the Imperial Court in Vienna, the elegant spa town of Bad Ischl is home to the Kaiservilla, one of the residences of Austro-Hungarian Emperor Franz Joseph I. Visitors can also see the Lehar Villa and the Imperial Villa, each reflecting the town’s imperial heritage.

The wider Salzkammergut region, which encompasses the city of Salzburg and some 76 lakes, offers a rich blend of culture, gastronomy, history and wellness. Travelers can choose spa treatments, long hikes, and seasonal outdoor activities that showcase the region’s natural beauty. Strolling through the lakes and mountains, it’s easy to see why composers such as Richard Strauss, Franz Schubert, Gustav Mahler and Johannes Brahms found inspiration here.
