American Airlines AAdvantage and US Airways Dividend Miles members will join the same frequent flyer program in the second quarter of 2015. The integration will merge mileage balances, align elite levels and qualification criteria, and introduce a unified upgrade policy for elite members traveling on either American or US Airways.
In early 2015, members who hold accounts in both programs will be given the opportunity to match those accounts ahead of the full integration. This step is intended to make the transition smoother and provide a more consistent experience for customers traveling on either carrier. Since January 2014, after the merger closed, American has already been offering reciprocal benefits to AAdvantage and Dividend Miles members to begin harmonizing the two programs.
“We couldn’t be more excited to welcome Dividend Miles members into the AAdvantage program next year,” said Suzanne Rubin, president, AAdvantage. “AAdvantage is the original frequent flyer program and is consistently recognized as best in class because it rewards our most loyal customers with opportunities to upgrade and redeem miles for travel on the world’s largest airline.”
The combined program aims to simplify mileage management and make it easier for members to earn and redeem miles across a larger network. Account balances will be consolidated so members maintain their earned mileage, while elite status tiers and the criteria to achieve them will be standardized between the two legacy programs. The new upgrade policy will apply to elite members regardless of whether their flights operate on American Airlines or US Airways, creating a single set of upgrade rules and procedures.
Members should watch for communication from American Airlines outlining the specific steps to match accounts and the timeline for merging balances and status. Preparing accounts in advance—such as ensuring contact information is current and mileage statements are reviewed—can help reduce issues during the transition. Customer service channels will be available to assist with any questions about matched accounts, status adjustments or mileage consolidation.
By unifying the programs, American Airlines expects to offer enhanced value and a clearer path to benefits for frequent flyers. The consolidation is designed to preserve members’ earned rewards while simplifying the loyalty experience across a broader route network. As details about the matching process and final program rules are released, members should review the official guidance from AAdvantage to understand how the changes affect their account and travel plans.
