MGM Resorts International recently completed one of the country’s largest rooftop solar installations atop the Mandalay Bay Convention Center. The system consists of more than 26,000 photovoltaic panels and supplies roughly 25% of the total electrical needs for Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino.
The company estimates the solar array will avoid about 8,400 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions each year—equivalent to removing approximately 1,700 cars from the road. The electricity generated is comparable to the energy required to power about 1,340 homes. Beyond environmental benefits, the installation helps stabilize energy costs for MGM Resorts and reduces demand on the southern Nevada power grid.
“MGM Resorts International has a long history of integrating environmentally responsible practices throughout our operations to help preserve the planet’s limited resources. Our continued partnership with NRG is a source of pride and inspires our desire to continually implement innovative solutions that promote renewable energy,” said Cindy Ortega, senior vice president and chief sustainability officer at MGM Resorts International.

“The expansion of our rooftop solar installation at Mandalay Bay significantly advances our resort’s commitment to being a leading sustainable destination for conferences and conventions. Utilizing energy produced from a renewable resource is a cornerstone of our comprehensive strategy of sustainable operation,” said Chuck Bowling, president and COO of Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino.
