Q&A with Tracey Cullen, Art Director

Sometimes we all need to unplug and relax to reset our minds and bodies. This Leisure Travel Issue focuses on carving out “me” time in some of the world’s most beautiful destinations. I recently spent a week in Jamaica doing very little besides soaking up the sun and enjoying delicious food. Where do you go when you need to unplug and recharge?

EU Countries to Begin Charging for Entry in 2024
In the March 8 issue of eFlyer, we explained the new European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) set to take effect in 2024 and invited readers to share their views. Two readers responded.
The problem with systems like this is that information is rarely completely secure. There should be an option to pay in cash, because credit card data can be hacked. Even the U.S. passport renewal system has shown vulnerabilities: after renewing and giving my email address, I received dozens of unsolicited travel offers. When I renewed again using a false email address, the spam stopped.

It creates a time-wasting inconvenience for travelers, and I question whether it really improves security — the only thing typically checked is the passport. Overall, it seems like a poor solution.

Will Unruly Passengers Be Banned from Flights in the United States?
In our March 29 issue of eFlyer, we reported on the rise in unruly passenger incidents and the calls for legislation to bar from commercial flights anyone fined or convicted for serious physical violence. We asked whether readers support such a bill. One reader responded:
Yes — remove them from the aircraft immediately. Jokes aside, passengers who behave badly should be banned from future flights.

Will Airline Passengers Soon Be Compensated for Delays, Cancellations?
In the May 10 issue of eFlyer, we covered the Biden administration and Department of Transportation’s proposal to require airlines to compensate passengers when significant schedule changes occur for reasons within the carrier’s control. We asked readers for their reactions. One reader offered this perspective:
If this proposal becomes law, the cost will be built into every ticket to cover potential compensation. If airlines avoid cancellations or major delays, that extra money simply increases their profits.

Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk, Sydney, Australia
I enjoyed the brief review of the Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk in May’s issue (page 40). My wife and I did the walk when we were in Sydney last February. The route is spectacular — sometimes high above the sea, sometimes at beach level. We passed Waverley Cemetery, pictured on page 40. One memorable detail was the poem on the grave of Marjorie Pizer, an Australian poet, whose marker sits next to the fence. I thought it was a touching farewell and attached a photo I took.
