Luxury Yacht Charters: Dream Yacht Charter, The Moorings & More

Imagine setting sail for an exotic destination with only your family or friends aboard a private yacht. The warm sun kisses the deck, a gentle breeze plays across the water, and an attentive crew caters to your needs while a personal chef prepares the finest local dishes tailored to your tastes. The captain guides the yacht to secluded coves, pristine beaches that feel undiscovered, or lively coastal hotspots for a night out.

“Sailing vacations offer the chance to discover a remote beach or restaurant only accessible by boat, snorkel in an uncrowded cove or watch the sunset at anchor wherever you choose in the world’s biggest swimming pool,” said Loïc Bonnet, CEO and founder of Dream Yacht Charter.

“A yacht charter is like a fully staffed, floating luxury villa that lets you explore beautiful regions with just the people you want to be with and unpack only once,” added Melanie Burke, a yacht charter broker with Fraser.

Interest in personalized yacht charters has been growing. The high cost of yacht ownership drives many travelers to charter instead of buying. Chartering is more economical for occasional users: you pay only for the time you use, fly to your destination, and then board your charter rather than sailing long distances, which saves time and fuel. Changing attitudes toward owning luxury assets have made charter services an increasingly attractive option, contributing to market growth.

By 2018, the global yacht charter market surpassed $13 billion and analysts forecast steady growth, with projections indicating an approximate 7 percent compound annual growth rate through 2027.

“The growth and popularity of yacht charters in recent years is unprecedented,” said Ian Pedersen, senior marketing manager at The Moorings. “What once was a best-kept secret among seasoned sailors has become a mainstream vacation choice that appeals to many types of travelers.”

Pedersen noted that the ease of renting a yacht for a week and visiting varied global destinations with a trusted company has broadened the market. As more all-inclusive, crewed yacht options become available, travelers with little or no boating experience can enjoy the freedom and flexibility of yachting.

When planning a charter, one key decision is whether to choose a bareboat or crewed yacht. Bareboat charters suit experienced sailors comfortable handling and crewing a vessel. If you prefer to relax and leave navigation, safety, and onboard service to professionals, a crewed charter is the right choice. After deciding, consult an experienced broker to match your needs to the ideal yacht and itinerary.

“Choosing the right yacht and destination depends on what the group enjoys most. That’s where an experienced charter broker adds value,” Burke explained. “Brokers advise on cruising areas suited to the time of year, ease of access, and the best yacht size and style for a group’s activities and budget.” Fraser specializes in fully crewed yachts, from 45-foot catamarans to superyachts over 300 feet.

“Fully crewed motor yachts in the 80- to 200-foot range are especially popular for family charters and groups of friends who want freedom to explore, exquisite service, fine dining, privacy, water sports, and access to places unreachable by land,” she said.

Yacht charters also offer meaningful opportunities for multigenerational families to reconnect. Burke recalled many clients who reported stronger bonds with their children and grandchildren during a charter, helped by abundant activities and a chance to unplug from devices—though most yachts still offer internet unless operating in very remote areas.

“Today’s yachts are modern, chic, and comfortable, equipped with the facilities you expect,” Bonnet added. “The biggest difference between a sailing vacation and a resort stay is waking up to a new view every day.”

Matching guests with the right crew is another important factor. The best brokers inspect yachts and meet crews to make informed recommendations. Crews vary in style: some provide formal service while others are more relaxed and interactive, joining guests in activities while maintaining excellent service.

Your destination choices are wide-ranging. The British Virgin Islands remains a top pick for The Moorings’ clientele, which includes both bareboat and crewed options. Crewed charters with The Moorings commonly include a three-person team: captain, chef, and steward. Other popular destinations include St. Martin, St. Lucia, Greece, Croatia, Tahiti, and Thailand.

Northrop & Johnson, established in New York in 1949 and now operating worldwide, primarily offers crewed charters, often with yachts exceeding 100 feet. Client preferences follow seasonal patterns: summer itineraries favor the Mediterranean, New England, and Alaska, while winter charters are frequently in the Caribbean. Southeast Asia remains popular year-round.

Fraser’s clients also follow seasonal trends. Popular summer destinations include Greece, the south of France, Italy, Sardinia, Croatia, and the Bahamas; in winter, the Caribbean is a favorite. Less typical but increasingly sought-after choices include Alaska, the Baltic, New England, Norway, and the South Pacific in summer, and destinations such as Antarctica, Australia, the Maldives, Thailand, and the Seychelles in winter.

Dream Yacht Charter reports demand for the British Virgin Islands, the Mediterranean, the Seychelles, the Grenadines in the Lesser Antilles, and exotic regions such as Asia and Tahiti. Dream Yacht Charter recently partnered with river-cruise specialist Les Canalous to add canal boating vacations across Europe, expanding options for travelers who prefer inland waterways.

“Travelers increasingly seek vacations that differ from mass tourism and cruise-ship routes,” Bonnet said. “They want authentic cultural experiences and to support local communities.”
