A former railway station in Canfranc, Spain, nestled in the Pyrenees near the Spanish–French border, has been converted into Hotel Canfranc Estación, a Royal Hideaway Hotel, a five‑star Gran Lujo property managed by Barceló Hotel Group. Since opening in March 2023, the hotel has attracted train enthusiasts, history lovers and visitors to Aragon seeking a distinctive place to stay.

Originally inaugurated by King Alfonso XIII in 1928 and declared a Site of Cultural Interest, the Canfranc station no longer serves rail traffic. The building is owned by the government of Aragon, which began restoration work in 2016 and invested approximately $16.6 million to rehabilitate the landmark. Barceló oversees hotel operations while preserving the site’s historic character.
The hotel features 104 guest rooms, including four luxury suites, located across the first and second floors. Culinary offerings are led by food and beverage directors Eduardo Salanova and Ana Acín and comprise three restaurants and two bars. Two of the restaurants are housed in restored train carriages that evoke the elegance of 20th‑century railroad dining cars, blending period detail with modern comfort.

The station’s grand historic hall now houses the hotel reception and lobby, maintaining the building’s original sense of scale and grandeur. On the ground floor guests can also find a wellness area that includes a heated indoor pool and a quiet library, combining relaxation with cultural ambience.
Madrid‑based Ilmiodesign led the interior design, drawing inspiration from the aesthetics of classic railway stations and long‑distance luxury trains of the early 20th century while introducing contemporary materials and finishes. The result is a sensitive restoration that highlights original architectural elements alongside carefully chosen modern interventions.

Declared an Asset of Cultural Interest in 2002, the station’s conversion into a luxury hotel was carried out with respect for its architectural and cultural heritage. Careful restoration preserves defining features while adapting the space for hospitality use.
Hotel Canfranc Estación also serves as a base for year‑round outdoor activities. Located near some of the highest peaks in Europe within the Aragon Pyrenees, the area offers extensive hiking and mountain biking trails in summer and excellent skiing opportunities in winter, making the hotel a convenient and atmospheric choice for travelers seeking both history and outdoor adventure.
