Lufthansa Group Reveals New Business and Economy Cabin Seats

Lufthansa Group has unveiled new business- and economy-class seat designs for its Airbus A320 fleet as part of a broader initiative to standardize A320 cabins across the group’s brands.

Both classes share the same overall design language, with business-class seats offering a slightly larger recline — up to 26 degrees — compared with 20 degrees in economy. That economy recline represents an improvement of eight degrees over the previous configuration. In the business cabin the center seat will remain unoccupied to increase passenger comfort.

The new seats will be fitted to all A320 aircraft delivered from 2019 onward and are intended for short- and medium-haul routes. Each design is tailored for use by one of the group’s carriers, with distinct styles developed for Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines and Swiss International Air Lines.

Italian manufacturer Geven engineered the seats, which feature slim backrests and full-foam seat cushions to balance weight savings with passenger comfort. The updated construction aims to create a sleeker cabin appearance while improving support and durability.

“A lot of customer feedback went into designing the seat and we are pleased to have already received a lot of positive feedback on the implemented features over the course of the project,” said Paul Estoppey, head of product cabin, Lufthansa Group.

Standardizing the A320 interiors across group carriers will simplify fleet transfers and reduce the time and cost involved when aircraft move between airlines within the group. The unified approach allows for more efficient maintenance, refurbishment planning and consistent passenger experience across brands.

In addition to enhanced recline and improved cushioning, the new seating program reflects a focus on modularity and commonality across the fleet. That approach helps the group quickly adapt cabin layouts as operational needs change while delivering a more cohesive product to travelers on short- and medium-haul flights.

By introducing these updated cabins, Lufthansa Group aims to raise comfort levels for passengers without compromising operational flexibility. The rollout on new deliveries from 2019 and beyond will gradually bring the entire A320 family into the standardized configuration across Lufthansa, Austrian and Swiss.
