KLM World Business Class Review: Seats, Service & Amenities

On the Ground: I arrived at JFK early, eager to try KLM’s new World Business Class. Although there was one passenger ahead of me, staff quickly directed me to another counter where I picked up my boarding pass. An agent escorted me to the lounge, where I had light snacks and water and used the extra time to finish some work before heading to the gate.

Pre-Flight: When I reached my seat, a flight attendant took my jacket and I stowed my belongings in the storage space. I visited the upper deck of the business-class cabin to greet a travel companion, and on returning I found the aisles crowded as other passengers boarded. A flight attendant noticed my hesitation and guided me through the pantry area so I could reach my seat comfortably.

Dutch designer Hella Jongerius fashioned the new cabin interior with a clear focus on sustainability, simplicity and passenger comfort. Thoughtful touches include carpet yarn made from decommissioned KLM flight attendant uniforms, curtain patterns that echo a beaded design, and a reversible pillow that matches the curtain pattern on one side and offers crisp white fabric for sleeping on the other.

After the pre-flight drink service, the crew offered light snacks. I chose a seared scallop with avocado and salsa instead of the tomato and mozzarella salad. Once everyone in the cabin was seated, amenity kits were distributed. I changed into the provided socks and settled in for the flight.

In-Flight: Having finished most of my emails in the lounge, I intended to relax on the overnight journey. I reclined my seat, covered my legs with the blanket and browsed the in-flight entertainment before selecting The Way Way Back. A courteous flight attendant addressed me by name and politely apologized for earlier mispronunciation—an issue I’m used to and found handled with grace.

KLM’s meals are prepared by acclaimed Dutch chefs. I enjoyed braised short ribs in Milanese sauce with mashed potatoes, Brussels sprouts and caramelized butternut squash, accompanied by a mixed green salad with cherry tomatoes and a selection of cheeses. The flight attendant suggested the Aaldering Lady M Pinotage, which paired nicely with the main course, and I finished the meal with a berry cheesecake for dessert.

After dinner, I used the privacy screen and converted the seat into a fully flat bed. The seat controls were straightforward, and I slept soundly, waking shortly before landing. Still satisfied from dinner, I skipped breakfast and had a glass of water as we made a smooth arrival in Amsterdam.

The Experience: My first trip with KLM was an enjoyable one. The staff were attentive and friendly, which made the overnight flight comfortable and relaxing.

Since the 1950s, KLM has given World Business Class passengers a small Delft Blue house filled with genever, a traditional Dutch gin. Modeled after canal houses in Amsterdam, the miniature makes a charming keepsake that recalls the flight and the destination.
