KLM Launches New Business Class Meal Boxes for Long-Haul Flights

Dutch airline KLM has introduced a refreshed meal service for its Europe business-class passengers. The carrier now serves boxed meals inspired by Japanese bento boxes, using separate compartments to present several small portions that together form a complete, balanced meal.

The new service began on Oct. 28 and KLM says the offerings are “more substantial and varied,” aiming to deliver a first-class quality experience in Europe business class.

For flights departing before noon, the boxes typically include fresh fruit, yogurt with granola, a selection of cold cuts, and a warm roll. On services after noon, passengers can expect a composed salad accompanied by several side dishes and a dessert option such as apple pie.

KLM is prioritizing sustainability and local sourcing where possible: the meals arrive in recyclable boxes and the airline intends to work with regional suppliers to populate the menus. The container design accommodates larger portions, provides a dedicated space for a drink, and is sized to fit the tray tables used on KLM’s Embraer aircraft.

On six of KLM’s longer European routes — Cagliari (CAG), Helsinki (HEL), Ibiza (IBZ), Porto (OPO), Split (SPU) and Valencia (VLC) — business-class customers can choose when they would like their meal service. Each boxed meal also includes a choice of a Dutch kroket snack or a spinach-and-feta pastry, adding a touch of local flavor to the offering.

The refreshed boxed meals aim to combine variety, convenience and a higher quality presentation while reducing single-use waste through recyclable packaging and sourcing decisions that favor local vendors. By adapting portioning and layout to the cabin environment, KLM seeks to improve the onboard dining experience for short- and medium-haul business-class travelers across its European network.
