Kimpton Hotel Monaco Chicago Unveils Multi-Year Renovation

The completion of a multi-year renovation at Kimpton’s Hotel Monaco Chicago culminates with the unveiling of an updated lobby and new event space. The redesign blends bold colors and rich textures with references to the building’s past, creating a distinctive atmosphere for guests. Renovation work began in 2011 with a guestroom refresh and also included enhancements to the bar and dining areas at the adjacent South Water Kitchen.

Design highlights in the refreshed lobby include backlit artwork behind the front desk that features vintage photographs of fashionable women wearing dramatic hats, a tasteful homage to the building’s original use as the D.B. Fisk & Co. hat factory. Communal seating has been prioritized, including an eight-seat bar-height table equipped with built-in power outlets and high-backed chairs—an inviting spot for business travelers who want a social environment to work or meet informally.

To enhance guest convenience and productivity, the hotel offers Power Packs available at the front desk. These kits include an iPhone charger, noise-cancelling headphones to reduce distractions, and a tablet preloaded with music and books, all designed to keep guests connected and entertained during their stay.

Alongside the lobby improvements, the property refreshed its bar and culinary offerings at South Water Kitchen. The updated restaurant bar complements the hotel’s overall aesthetic while providing new options for meeting breakouts, casual gatherings, and socializing in an energetic setting.

“We’re thrilled the full makeover is now complete,” said Marco Scherer, general manager of Hotel Monaco Chicago. “The new look creates a fresh ambiance that combines comfort and style, and allows us to introduce great new features like communal lobby seating and fun culinary options for meeting breakouts.”

The renovation pays careful attention to blending modern amenities with historic character. From the power-equipped communal table to the curated visual nods to the building’s hat-factory heritage, the space is designed to serve both leisure and business travelers seeking a memorable downtown Chicago experience.
