Juneyao Airlines Joins Star Alliance as New Connecting Partner

Shanghai-based Juneyao Airlines will join Star Alliance as a Connecting Partner, with the arrangement taking effect next year. As a Connecting Partner, Juneyao can offer links to the Star Alliance network without becoming a full member, enabling passengers to combine Juneyao flights with Star Alliance carriers on single itineraries more seamlessly.

Passengers on itineraries that include transfers between a Star Alliance member and a Connecting Partner will receive standard alliance services such as passenger and baggage through check-in. In addition, Star Alliance Gold members traveling on eligible itineraries will receive a tailored set of privileges aligned with the specific product and service offerings of Juneyao Airlines.

For Star Alliance Gold cardholders flying on qualifying itineraries including Juneyao, benefits are expected to include lounge access, fast-track security, additional baggage allowance, and priority services such as check-in, boarding, standby and baggage delivery. The exact scope of these privileges will reflect agreements between Juneyao and the individual Star Alliance members with which it coordinates.

The alliance has stated that work is underway to implement the necessary technology and commercial links that will allow Juneyao Airlines to begin serving Star Alliance connecting passengers during the second quarter of 2017. Connecting Partners will sign bilateral commercial agreements with selected Star Alliance member airlines; those agreements may cover Frequent Flyer Programme-based privileges and other cooperative arrangements.

Mark Schwab, CEO of Star Alliance, welcomed the development, noting that Juneyao Airlines strengthens the alliance’s offering in China, particularly in the Shanghai market. He highlighted that Juneyao’s growing route network will give Star Alliance passengers more choices for connections through China’s major cities and to several international destinations.

This Connecting Partner arrangement reflects a trend among global alliances to broaden connectivity by working with carriers that can provide important regional feed and city-pair options without full alliance membership. For travelers, the changes are intended to simplify transfer processes and expand access to familiar benefits when combining flights operated by Juneyao and Star Alliance members on a single journey.

Implementation will depend on completing technical integrations and finalizing bilateral commercial agreements, so passengers should check specific itineraries and ticketing rules to confirm which benefits apply. Once operational, the partnership aims to offer smoother connections and a more consistent customer experience for travelers routing through Shanghai and other Chinese hubs served by Juneyao Airlines.
