Jasper Dark Sky Festival: Stargazing Events & Night Photography Guide

Jasper National Park in Alberta, Canada, one of the world’s largest nature preserves and the only park to encompass an entire town, was officially designated a Dark Sky Preserve in 2011. That designation recognizes the park’s role in protecting the nighttime environment and makes it the home of the annual Jasper Dark Sky Festival.

This year’s festival runs from October 17 to 26 and opens with Symphony Under the Stars at the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge, featuring a celestial-themed performance by the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra Strings. The event schedule includes a range of stargazing and space-related programs suitable for visitors of all ages and interests.

On October 23, attendees have an excellent opportunity to view a partial solar eclipse occurring shortly before sunset. On October 25, Canadian astronaut Col. Chris Hadfield will appear with broadcaster Jay Ingram to discuss space exploration, science communication, and life beyond Earth. Later that evening, astronomers from the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada and other organizations will lead the Pyramid Island Starlight Adventure, a guided stargazing basecamp that offers expert-led observing and interpretation of the night sky.

At 8:30 p.m. that same night, a VIP reception with Col. Hadfield will provide an intimate setting to talk about the cosmos over cocktails and canapés; tickets for the reception are available for purchase. The festival’s programming blends public events, guided astronomy sessions, and special presentations, creating unique opportunities to experience dark-sky preservation, astronomical phenomena, and science outreach in a protected wilderness setting.

Visitors should prepare for typical mountain weather and plan to bring warm clothing, a flashlight with a red filter or red cellophane to preserve night vision, and a sturdy pair of binoculars or a telescope if they have one. Many festival events are family-friendly, but some sessions have limited capacity and require advance registration or tickets. Attending events at Jasper’s Dark Sky Preserve not only offers breathtaking views of the Milky Way and other celestial sights, but also supports ongoing efforts to reduce light pollution and preserve natural nighttime habitats.

Whether you attend concerts under the stars, watch an eclipse, join a guided stargazing trek, or hear from leading voices in space exploration, the Jasper Dark Sky Festival provides a memorable way to connect with the night sky in one of Canada’s most spectacular protected landscapes.
