Set to open in January 2026, Black Sand Hotel on a peninsula in Iceland’s Ölfus region will be the country’s first beachfront boutique hotel. The property’s 70 guestrooms and nine suites are designed to blend seamlessly with the dramatic landscape of Iceland’s southern coast, offering guests direct access to black sand beaches, rugged mountains and views over the North Atlantic.

“With the opening of Black Sand Hotel, we’re setting a new benchmark for hospitality along the Icelandic coast,” said Óskar Vignisson, general manager of Black Sand Hotel. “We’ve created a calm counterpoint to Iceland’s wild elements, so guests can slow down, appreciate the hotel’s relationship with the landscape, and reconnect with themselves and others. We look forward to welcoming both visitors and locals to this seaside oasis.”
The hotel’s minimalist interiors emphasize natural materials and soft textures, creating warm, tactile spaces that complement the stark beauty outside. Expansive windows frame uninterrupted views of the Ölfusá River, volcanic black sand, and surrounding mountains, bringing the coastal scenery into the guestrooms and public areas.

Global luxury furniture brand DUX supplied furnishings for the hotel’s public spaces, restaurant and guest rooms, marking a landmark collaboration and the company’s first comprehensive installation in Iceland. “We are extremely proud to be part of Black Sand Hotel,” said Jonas Andersson, Nordic marketing and sales manager for DUX. “This hotel will be an exceptional destination, offering a complete DUX experience where rest for body and mind is central.”
Dining at the hotel centers on Nordic cuisine at ÓMUR restaurant and bar, which emphasizes seasonal, local ingredients prepared with contemporary technique and respect for Icelandic food traditions. Musical programming draws inspiration from Icelandic composer and multi-instrumentalist Ólafur Arnalds, bringing ambient, evocative soundscapes into public spaces and special events.
A spa is planned to open later in the year, expanding the hotel’s wellness offerings. Facilities will include a sauna, steam bath, geothermal hot tubs, a cold plunge, a yoga studio and a range of treatments and therapies. The spa will also feature bodycare products from the professional skin science brand [comfort zone], supporting restorative rituals designed to balance the senses after time outdoors.
Located on a stretch of coastline prized for its raw scenery and easy access to natural attractions, Black Sand Hotel aims to offer a thoughtful, place-based hospitality experience. Between its coastal setting, minimalist design, curated dining and wellness amenities, the hotel positions itself as a refined base for exploring Iceland’s south coast—whether guests seek restorative quiet, nature-focused activity, or cultural encounters in the surrounding region.
