Hyatt Hotels Corp. has announced plans to expand its presence in Africa with the first Hyatt-branded hotel in Dakar, Senegal. Slated to open in 2016, Hyatt Dakar will be situated in the heart of the city’s business district and is designed to serve both business and leisure travelers.
The property will offer 140 guestrooms and suites, two distinct restaurants, a guest lounge and bar, a full-service spa, and flexible meeting and event space to accommodate conferences and social gatherings. The combination of modern amenities and a prime location aims to position the hotel as a convenient choice for visitors to one of West Africa’s major commercial centers.
“Africa’s hotel market remains underdeveloped, despite a growing middle class and increased inward investment in recent years, which has driven higher demand for quality accommodations,” said Peter Norman, senior vice president of real estate and development for Hyatt Hotels & Resorts in Europe, Africa and the Middle East. “This environment presents substantial opportunities for Hyatt, and we are prioritizing development across the continent. We believe the Hyatt brand and this hotel’s strategic location in Dakar will appeal strongly to both business and leisure travelers.”
Hyatt currently operates six hotels across Africa, with properties in Egypt, Morocco, South Africa and Tanzania. The addition of Hyatt Dakar marks a continued effort by the company to grow its footprint on the continent and respond to rising demand for internationally branded hotels offering consistent service and amenities.
Hyatt Dakar’s planned features—spacious guest rooms and suites, multiple dining options, wellness facilities, and adaptable meeting areas—reflect the growing expectations of international and regional guests. The hotel’s central positioning within Dakar’s business district should make it a convenient base for corporate visitors, diplomatic delegations, and tourists exploring the city.
As investment and economic activity increase across West Africa, hospitality brands are expanding to meet evolving traveler needs. Hyatt’s move into Dakar underscores this trend and signals continued interest by global operators in African markets where demand for upscale and internationally managed hotels is rising.
