Hyatt Regency London – The Churchill Hotel Review & Booking Guide

Arrival/Check-in: As our taxi pulled up to the hotel’s covered entrance, several bellmen were assisting guests with luggage and hailing cabs. One bellman immediately opened our door and took charge of our bags. Inside, a receptionist kindly suggested we move to a lower desk so I could speak face to face from my wheelchair. She reviewed the hotel’s amenities and explained that the Regency Club Lounge was undergoing renovations and was temporarily operating out of the Churchill Bar. A short while later we were escorted to our room. (30/30)

Guest Quarters: Our Club King room faced the peaceful greenery of Portman Square. Guests can borrow a key from the concierge to play tennis or simply sit and enjoy the tranquil garden. The room featured a large work desk, a flat-screen television, and cabinets stocked with an umbrella, iron and ironing board, tea and coffee service, a safe, and even a flashlight. The spacious, accessible bathroom was elegantly appointed, though the water pressure was disappointing. This was the first hotel we have stayed at where both the guestroom and bathroom doors opened automatically via the room key and a control panel—an exceptionally useful feature for wheelchair users. Services/Amenities: Club-level guests can enjoy a Continental breakfast, with the added option of ordering hot dishes such as eggs, porridge, and pancakes from a menu. The Churchill Bar, decorated with photographs of Winston Churchill, is busy each morning, and the staff were attentive about refilling our coffee while we read the papers. For a full meal, the hotel restaurant Montagu offers seasonal dishes and the Montagu Afternoon Tea, which won a Tea Guild award in 2010. Its tiered presentation of traditional British sandwiches, scones served with strawberry jam or Cornish clotted cream, and a selection of pastries—including Churchill’s favorite, chocolate éclairs—makes an impressive spread. Guests can work off those treats at the fitness center or on a short walk to nearby Oxford Street for shopping. (39/40)

The Experience: From the moment we entered the hotel, it felt lively and energetic. During our weekend stay a wedding celebration brought boisterous cheer, and the restaurant remained full each night until closing. Breakfast was similarly bustling. Despite the activity, our luxurious room with its calming view provided the perfect retreat after a day exploring London.
