How This River Cruise Eliminates Food Waste for Sustainable Travel

With sustainable tourism becoming an increasingly important trend, Uniworld Boutique River Cruises is taking concrete steps to reduce its environmental impact. The company has launched a formal plan to cut food waste and recently partnered with the Certified B Corporation food-waste reduction program Leanpath. Uniworld is currently on track to reduce 50 percent of its total food waste by 2025.

Food waste contributes roughly 6 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions. After implementing Leanpath’s approach, Uniworld saw an early 15 percent reduction in food waste within just three months. Nearly half of Uniworld’s fleet has adopted Leanpath techniques, and the line planned to expand the program fleet-wide.

Leanpath developed an automated, data-driven food-waste tracking system in 2004. Combined with staff coaching, the system supplies the technology and processes that help kitchens worldwide improve efficiency and dramatically reduce waste at scale.

Reducing food waste is one element of Uniworld’s broader sustainability strategy. The company is also expanding sustainable travel offerings for guests, has committed to carbon neutrality through the Glasgow Declaration on Climate Action in Tourism, and is working to eliminate single-use plastics across its operations.
