Hong Kong Airlines will introduce a new three-times-weekly service to Australia beginning January 8, 2016. The triangular route will operate from Hong Kong (HKG) to Gold Coast (OOL), continue to Cairns (CNS), and then return to Hong Kong. Flights will be operated with an Airbus A330 configured with 292 seats, including 32 business-class seats.
Li Dianchun, Commercial Director at Hong Kong Airlines, said the carrier is pleased to launch the long-awaited triangular service connecting Hong Kong and Australia. The schedule is aimed at serving growing leisure demand for both the Gold Coast and Cairns, two popular holiday destinations.
By leveraging Hong Kong’s role as an international hub, the airline expects the new route to appeal to travelers from across Asia. Passengers from cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Chengdu, Nanjing, Hangzhou, Okinawa, Bangkok and Taipei will gain more direct options for travel to these Australian destinations.
The addition of the Gold Coast–Cairns sector expands Hong Kong Airlines’ regional network and provides more connectivity for leisure and transit passengers. With comfortable cabin configurations and multiple weekly frequencies, the route aims to balance convenience for tourists and efficient connections through Hong Kong’s airport.
Hong Kong Airlines will coordinate schedules and services to accommodate transfer passengers and leisure travelers, supporting tourism links between Asia and Australia. The carrier’s deployment of the Airbus A330 on this triangular operation reflects its focus on medium-haul leisure markets while maintaining service standards across cabin classes.
The new service underscores the ongoing demand for travel between Asia and Australia, and highlights Hong Kong’s position as a gateway for regional tourism. Travelers planning trips to the Gold Coast or Cairns can expect a regular, well-served route that connects popular Australian destinations with major Asian cities through Hong Kong.
