The rock-cut tombs rise from sheer cliffs up to four stories high and feature low doorways and façades carved by skilled Alexandrian craftsmen in the first century AD. Architectural details include Greek pediments, Roman pilasters, Persian floral motifs and Egyptian sphinxes and birds, reflecting Al Ula’s role as a crossroads of civilizations. These monumental façades date back thousands of years, while the surrounding landscape bears signs of human presence that could span far longer. Ancient petroglyphs depicting people and animals are etched into the rock and are believed to be many thousands of years old.

For those planning a winter trip, the Winter at Tantora Festival offers a rich combination of cultural performances, outdoor activities and immersive heritage experiences that highlight Al Ula’s extraordinary archaeology and natural beauty. It is an ideal opportunity to experience world-class music, local traditions and the profound sense of history that defines this exceptional region.
