The world’s first runway sauna opened for a single day this month at Helsinki Airport in Finland. In a nation with more than three million saunas, this runway installation joined a long tradition, but it also stood as a playful symbol of Finnish wellbeing and happiness.
Placed near the runway, the temporary sauna was not intended for passenger use; instead, it was created to showcase Finnish sauna culture in a striking and memorable way. The compact wooden structure was designed by Finavia, the Finnish airport operator, and positioned beside a runway to highlight a contrast: the cold, impersonal world of air travel versus the warm, intimate ritual of the Finnish sauna.

“Most airports have transit zones — some even have saunas. But only Helsinki Airport can offer a transit to Finnish happiness. It is the touchpoint to tune into the rhythm, values and mindset of Finland. Your story can go anywhere from here. To showcase this short transition, we built the world’s first runway sauna at Helsinki Airport,” said Anna Tuomi, head of marketing at Finavia.
Although the runway sauna was temporary, Helsinki Airport already features a permanent sauna inside one of its lounges. In Finnair’s Platinum Wing Lounge, travelers can enjoy a traditional wood-burning Finnish sauna and private shower suites. These facilities are available to top-tier Finnair and oneworld elite members, giving passengers a chance to begin their Finnish experience before they even board.
Finnair has toyed with the idea of bringing sauna culture into aviation in lighter ways: earlier this year the airline ran an April Fools’ Day campaign imagining an in-flight sauna. While that remains a prank rather than reality, the lounge sauna helps introduce visitors to sauna traditions and the broader culture of wellbeing that Finns prize.
The runway sauna was a creative public relations initiative and a reminder of how central saunas are to life in Finland — not only as a place for bathing, but as a social ritual and a moment of calm. By situating a sauna beside a runway, the campaign invited travelers to pause and consider a different tempo: the restorative warmth of a sauna as a contrast to the rush and chill of travel.
For travelers passing through Helsinki, the airport’s permanent sauna offers a tangible taste of that ritual. Whether experienced briefly in a lounge or explored more fully across Finland’s lakeside cottages and urban spots, the sauna remains a fundamental expression of Finnish culture and wellbeing.
