From HafenCity’s stylish rooftop lounges to one of Europe’s most famous entertainment districts, Hamburg comes alive after dark. Much of the evening activity is concentrated in the southern St. Pauli neighborhood, around the Reeperbahn and stretching south toward the Elbe River.
East along the river lies HafenCity, a revitalized area built from restored 19th-century brick warehouses. On pleasant evenings, the bars and cafés overlooking Grasbrookhafen and Sandtorhafen offer relaxed spots to start the night. Enjoy a glass of wine at Kaiser’s or cocktails at CARLS an der Elbphilharmonie beneath the glass façade of the striking Elbphilharmonie concert hall. These riverside venues are also known for fresh local seafood.
For sweeping harbor views, visit Tower Bar atop Hotel Hafen Hamburg, about 200 feet above the water, or reserve a seat at Bar 20Up in the Empire Riverside Hotel, which opens at 6 p.m. and provides an ideal setting for a sunset Champagne cocktail beside its glass wall.
For the rowdier side of Hamburg’s nightlife, venture into the Reeperbahn, the city’s famous entertainment strip often called Germany’s “mile of sin.” Whether you prefer people-watching and grabbing a Currywurst at Lucullus or seeking more uninhibited nighttime entertainment, the Reeperbahn delivers a lively mix.
While the area has been tamed in recent years and the red-light district is now limited to a smaller zone, reminders of the neighborhood’s seafaring past remain. Discover Germany’s first burlesque venue, Queen Calavera on Gerhardstrasse, the revolving striptease stage at Susis Show Bar on Beatles-Platzl, and drag and cabaret acts at Pulverfass Cabaret.
St. Pauli offers much more than spectacle: it’s packed with restaurants, bars and clubs where music runs late into the night. Sip from more than 100 cocktails and watch the Reeperbahn scene through the glass wall at Angie’s nightclub. Hear live blues, rock ’n’ roll, funk and soul at Indra, a historic venue where The Beatles once played, or enjoy a beer at Zum Anker, one of the city’s surviving seamen’s bars. For an all-night local experience of dining and dancing, head to Herzblut St. Pauli.
Talstrasse, just off the Reeperbahn, is a hub for gay nightlife with a variety of bars and clubs. The indie and arty club Ego attracts a creative crowd, while WunderBar draws a younger audience. Toom Peerstall on Clemens-Schultz-Strasse is a popular spot, and Piccadilly Club on Silbersacktwiete remains a neighborhood institution.
If you prefer an elegant evening, book a table with views of the Inner Alster Lake at Haerlin in the Fairmont Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten. There, Chef Christoph Rüffer serves Mediterranean-accented classical French cuisine for a refined dining experience.
