Shepherd W&K Galleries, the New York outpost of W&K Wienerroither & Kohlbacher, presents a focused look at Gustav Klimt’s graphic work in the exhibition “Gustav Klimt – Drawings.” Widely recognized as a founder of the Vienna Secession and one of Austria’s most influential painters, Klimt left a lasting mark on modern art. This exhibition, timed for the centennial of his death in 1918, brings together 40 drawings that include portraits, studies and nudes, highlighting the artist’s draftsmanship and his interest in human form and emotion.

Throughout his career Klimt challenged the conservative norms of Viennese society. He frequently addressed themes seen as controversial at the time—sexual desire, pregnancy, mortality and the complexities of intimate relationships—choosing to represent them with frankness rather than concealment. His willingness to confront social hypocrisy and surface hidden aspects of life generated criticism in his day, but also paved the way for later movements. Decades after his death, Klimt’s ideas and visual language were among the influences on Viennese Actionism and other avant-garde developments.

“Gustav Klimt – Drawings” offers viewers a concentrated experience of the artist’s working methods and expressive range. The selected works reveal both meticulous studies of anatomy and freer, more experimental gestures, providing insight into how Klimt translated observation and imagination into finished paintings. On view through May 27, the exhibition is installed at Shepherd W&K Galleries, 58 East 79th Street, where the intimate scale of the drawings allows for close, contemplative viewing.

Visitors can expect an exhibition that emphasizes Klimt’s role as both an innovative draftsman and a cultural provocateur. By focusing on drawings rather than large-scale paintings, the show spotlights the immediacy of his hand, the subtlety of line, and the ways he explored identity, sensuality and mortality in pared-down form. The presentation underscores Klimt’s enduring relevance and the continuing interest in his nuanced, often challenging investigations of the human condition.
