Shepherd W&K Galleries, the New York outpost of W&K Wienerroither & Kohlbacher, presents a focused look at Gustav Klimt’s graphic work in the exhibition “Gustav Klimt – Drawings.” Widely recognized as a founder of the Vienna Secession and one of Austria’s most influential painters, Klimt left a lasting mark on modern art. This exhibition, timed for the centennial of his death in 1918, brings together 40 drawings that include portraits, studies and nudes, highlighting the artist’s draftsmanship and his interest in human form and emotion.
Throughout his career Klimt challenged the conservative norms of Viennese society. He frequently addressed themes seen as controversial at the time—sexual desire, pregnancy, mortality and the complexities of intimate relationships—choosing to represent them with frankness rather than concealment. His willingness to confront social hypocrisy and surface hidden aspects of life generated criticism in his day, but also paved the way for later movements. Decades after his death, Klimt’s ideas and visual language were among the influences on Viennese Actionism and other avant-garde developments.
