Gulf Air Launches London Routes Using Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner

Gulf Air will upgrade the aircraft on its Bahrain (BAH)–London Heathrow (LHR) service to the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner later this year. The Dreamliner will enter service on June 15 and will operate twice daily on the route, offering increased frequency and a refreshed onboard experience for travellers between Bahrain and London.

The airline has confirmed delivery of five Boeing 787-9s during the current year, with additional aircraft scheduled to join the fleet through the end of 2020. Each 787-9 in Gulf Air’s configuration features 282 seats in total: 256 economy-class seats and 26 seats in the airline’s recently updated Falcon Gold business-class cabin. The Falcon Gold product introduces refined seating, contemporary finishes and amenities designed to enhance comfort for long-haul passengers.

Gulf Air’s existing long-haul fleet has relied primarily on Airbus A330 aircraft. The introduction of the 787-9 Dreamliners marks a phased fleet renewal, with the new type set to gradually replace A330s on longer routes. The 787-9 brings several operational and passenger benefits, including improved fuel efficiency, lower emissions per seat and a cabin environment engineered for greater comfort — such as higher humidity, larger windows and improved pressurization compared with older widebody types.

The move to Dreamliners on the Bahrain–London sector also reflects growing demand on the route and Gulf Air’s strategy to modernize its long-haul offering. Operating twice daily with the 787-9 will give customers more scheduling flexibility and an upgraded product across both cabins. Gulf Air’s deployment plan aims to balance capacity with demand while rolling out its new business-class seats to key international markets.

Other carriers serve the same city pair. British Airways, for example, operates flights between Heathrow and Bahrain using Boeing 777-family aircraft. Gulf Air’s introduction of the 787-9 adds a competitive option for travellers choosing between carriers on the route.

Passengers flying Gulf Air’s Dreamliner can expect typical 787 advantages such as quieter cabins, improved air circulation, and larger windows with dimmable features. The new Falcon Gold seats are intended to provide a more private and comfortable experience for business and premium leisure travellers, while the economy cabin has been arranged to maximize comfort on long sectors without sacrificing seat count.

Gulf Air’s fleet renewal program represents part of a broader modernization effort that includes cabin refurbishments and service updates. As the airline receives additional 787-9s through the coming months, it will announce further schedule adjustments and route deployments to make best use of the new aircraft. Customers are advised to check booking confirmations and Gulf Air’s official communications for details about which aircraft will operate specific flights and to confirm the opening date for Dreamliner service on their booked itinerary.

The switch to Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners on the Bahrain–London route is expected to enhance passenger comfort, increase operational efficiency, and support Gulf Air’s longer-term network and product development plans as it updates its long-haul fleet.
