Elegance defines The Royal Hotel in the Victorian seaside village of Ventnor on the Isle of Wight. Built in 1832, this historic hotel is part of a select group of properties that have appeared in every Michelin Guide since its first edition in 1911. The interiors combine stately furnishings with velvet, silk and toile de Jouy fabrics, while the hotel’s gardens and bay offer poetic views that enhance its English country house atmosphere. In the dining room, chefs trained in Michelin-starred kitchens, including experience at The Savoy, prepare menus focused on locally sourced produce, fresh seafood and regional meats.
The Isle of Wight is well known for its music festivals and is also one of Europe’s richest sources of dinosaur fossils, including recently identified species of pterosaur. Local paleontologist Martin Simpson, often called the island’s “Fossil Man,” has helped organize prehistoric sites into an accessible Dinosaur Experience trail. The trail is further supported by the Dinosaur Island app, which helps visitors plan fossil-hunting outings and interpret sites around the island.
Travel to the island is quick and scenic. A popular option is the high-speed passenger hovercraft service from Southsea on the mainland to Ryde, where the craft lands directly on the beach. The hovercraft runs roughly every 30 minutes and completes the crossing in about nine minutes, making it a convenient and memorable way to reach the Isle of Wight.
