Feeling Vacation-Deprived? How to Reclaim Time Off and Relax

A recent survey from Allianz Travel Insurance found that 135 million Americans did not take a vacation in the past 12 months. The findings come from Allianz’s annual Vacation Confidence Index, which measures how confident Americans feel about their ability to take vacations.

Conducted in June, the survey revealed that 56 percent of adults — more than 135 million people — reported not having taken a vacation in the previous year. That total is up from 126 million in the prior year, reflecting a year-over-year increase in Americans going without vacations.

The survey also breaks down more recent travel patterns: 15 percent said they hadn’t vacationed in seven to 12 months, while 10 percent reported it had been four to six months since their last trip. Just 16 percent of respondents had taken a vacation within the last three months.

The research is based on a nationally representative telephone sample of 1,000 randomly selected U.S. adults. With this sample size, the results carry a margin of error of ±3.1 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, compared with polling the entire U.S. adult population.
