Tierra Hotels luxury collection is offering a new reason to visit Patagonia this fall: a five-day photography safari led by Chilean wildlife photographer and author Pia Vergara. The expedition will also include wildlife photographer and marine biologist Rodrigo Moraga Zuniga and veterinarian Cristina Trugeda Harboe, who brings expertise in trekking and horseback riding.
The safari explores the dramatic and varied landscapes of Torres del Paine National Park. The initial dates for this immersive journey are Sept. 16–22, with additional departures planned for October 2013 and April 2014. The program is designed for photographers of all levels who want guided instruction in the field while experiencing Patagonia’s iconic scenery and wildlife.
The per-person rate, based on double occupancy, is $4,700. This package includes transfers to and from Punta Arenas Airport (PUQ), five nights’ accommodation at Tierra Patagonia, all meals with an open bar featuring house wines and liquors, use of spa and pool facilities, a sailing excursion on Lago Grey, park entrance fees, and daily guided outings. International flights and specialized photography equipment are not included in the price.
Participants can expect small-group instruction and guided shoots focused on landscape, wildlife and seascape photography, along with interpretive guidance about local ecology and animal behavior from the trip leaders. Accommodations at Tierra Patagonia offer a comfortable base for returning from field excursions, with amenities that allow time to review images and relax after active days exploring the park.
Practically oriented sessions will likely cover compositional techniques, light management in variable Patagonian weather, wildlife approach and ethical considerations, and camera settings for both stills and low-light conditions. The presence of a marine biologist and a veterinarian adds depth to the natural-history insights available during hikes, boat trips and horseback outings, enriching photographic opportunities with contextual information about species and habitats.
Guests should plan to bring their own cameras, lenses and accessories; while basic guidance is provided, the trip fee does not cover photography gear. Layered clothing, waterproof outerwear, sturdy footwear and sun protection are essential for changing conditions in the park. Participants should also confirm luggage limits for domestic transfers when booking international flights.
This itinerary is well suited to travelers who want a focused photographic experience combined with comfortable lodging and curated excursions in one of the world’s most photogenic wilderness areas. The combination of expert leaders, tailored field instruction and scenic variety aims to help attendees return home with both improved skills and striking images of Patagonia.
