Etihad Airways and Air Malta have expanded their codeshare partnership to provide travelers with smoother connections between Europe, the GCC region and Australia. The strengthened agreement builds on a cooperation first established in 2010 and coincides with Etihad’s recently launched Abu Dhabi (AUH)–Rome (FCO) service.
Under the updated codeshare terms, Air Malta will place its KM code on Etihad’s new Abu Dhabi–Rome route, while Etihad will include its EY code on Air Malta’s nonstop service between Rome and Malta (MLA). The expansion also adds Air Malta’s code to Etihad’s Abu Dhabi flights to several Australian cities, including Sydney (SYD), Melbourne (MEL), Brisbane (BNE) and Perth (PER).
This enhancement improves itinerary options and simplifies booking for passengers traveling between Malta, Italy and key hubs in the GCC and Australia. By synchronizing schedules and offering reciprocal codes on one another’s services, both carriers aim to offer more seamless connections, coordinated ticketing and easier transfer experiences.
Frequent flyers and leisure travelers alike stand to benefit from the increased network reach. Air Malta customers gain access to Etihad’s broader long-haul network via Abu Dhabi, opening direct connections to major Australian gateways. Conversely, Etihad passengers can now book travel to Malta through Rome on a single ticket using Etihad’s EY code on Air Malta’s Rome–Malta sector.
Operationally, codeshare agreements like this help airlines optimize capacity and present more flight options without adding extra flights. For passengers, the practical advantages include simplified baggage transfer, unified itineraries and the potential for smoother airport connections when both legs are ticketed together.
The expansion marks another step in the two carriers’ longstanding partnership and highlights a focus on improving connectivity between Europe, the GCC and the Asia-Pacific region. Travelers planning routes that involve Rome, Malta, Abu Dhabi or Australian destinations should find it easier to search, book and connect across these networks under the refreshed agreement.
