The 2016 World Airline Awards, published last month by passenger survey firm Skytrax, named Dubai-based carrier Emirates as the World’s Best Airline. Emirates climbed from fifth place the previous year to overtake regional rival Qatar Airways. Skytrax’s rankings are widely respected because they are based on extensive global passenger surveys, giving the awards strong credibility within the industry.
Tim Clark, President of Emirates, said the recognition reflects the airline’s focus on customers: “We listen carefully to our customers, and then relentlessly challenge ourselves to deliver and exceed expectations. The fact that these awards are based on the direct feedback from passengers is gratifying and wonderful recognition for all of the hard work that’s gone into creating the Emirates experience.”
In addition to the overall airline ranking, Skytrax presents awards in specific categories. Emirates earned the award for World’s Best In-Flight Entertainment and also placed highly across first-, business- and economy-class cabin categories. These distinctions highlight the carrier’s investments in onboard services, cabin comfort and entertainment offerings.
The low-cost segment also saw notable winners. Norwegian was honored as the World’s Best Long-Haul Low-Cost Carrier and was named Europe’s Best Low-Cost Airline. AirAsia secured the World’s Best Low-Cost Airline title for the eighth consecutive year, continuing its strong regional performance and customer appeal in the budget market.
In North America, Virgin America was recognized as the continent’s Best Airline. The carrier, recently acquired by Alaska Airlines, won all major North American categories, including Best Airline, Best Low-Cost Airline and Best Airline Staff—an indication of strong onboard service and staff performance across its network.
