Travelers seeking many of the comforts of business class without the high cost or the need to burn valuable points have embraced premium economy. This cabin class blends several elevated features of business class with the affordability and familiarity of economy, making long flights more comfortable for budget-conscious flyers.
Emirates, the well-known Middle Eastern carrier and one of the world’s largest long-haul airlines, has added premium-economy to its product lineup. The carrier is recognized for high-end offerings in its top cabins, and its newest premium-economy option brings upgraded comfort and amenities to a wider group of passengers.
Marketed informally as “sleeperettes,” Emirates’ premium-economy seats provide several notable improvements over standard economy. Passengers benefit from approximately six inches of extra legroom, more personal space thanks to fewer seats per row, and wider seats that allow greater elbow room. The cabin also includes enhanced onboard services such as upgraded meals, larger in-flight entertainment screens, and improved amenity kits.
In addition to the seating and service upgrades, Emirates’ premium economy configuration includes conveniences designed for longer flights, like dedicated storage and a more private, relaxed environment. Some aircraft layouts are expected to feature a private bathroom accessible to premium-economy passengers, further distinguishing the cabin from standard economy.
Emirates planned to begin installing premium-economy seats on its Airbus A380 and Boeing 777 aircraft starting in 2020, rolling out the new cabin across selected routes over time. The introduction of premium economy reflects a broader industry trend: airlines are responding to passenger demand for a middle ground between economy and business class—offering meaningful comfort improvements without the steep price of a business-class ticket.
For travelers considering the upgrade, premium economy can be an attractive compromise. It delivers several tangible benefits—more legroom, a wider seat, better dining, and enhanced entertainment—while remaining significantly more affordable than a business-class fare. These features make premium economy particularly appealing on long-haul flights where added space and upgraded services noticeably improve the travel experience.
