DFW Airport Updates Pick-Up and Drop-Off Rules for Travelers

Dallas Fort Worth International Airport is converting curbside areas at all five terminals to active loading and unloading zones, effective Sept. 8. This change is designed to improve traffic flow and enhance traveler safety. Visitors dropping off or picking up passengers are encouraged to use the terminal parking garages, which will be available at no additional charge. The airport has recently added nearly 1,200 one-hour parking spaces to support this shift.

“There are more vehicles than ever at the airport, and we want to keep traffic moving, while providing safer access to our terminals,” said Sean Donohue, CEO, Dallas Fort Worth International Airport. “These necessary changes will improve the overall customer experience as it relates to traffic flow, efficiencies and ease of navigation.”

Signs are already posted throughout the airport to indicate the new active loading and unloading zones. Passengers and drivers are encouraged to begin using the terminal garages during August to adjust to the new pattern; enforcement of the curbside policy will begin in full on Sept. 8.

Recent traffic comparisons show a significant rise in vehicle activity: from February 2015 to February 2018, the airport recorded more than 245,000 additional visits in that month alone. Curbside congestion at peak times has been an ongoing challenge across all terminals, and the new policy aligns DFW with other major airports that typically prohibit curbside parking and idling to maintain steady traffic flow.

Following implementation of the active loading and unloading zones, DFW plans to reconfigure transportation services as needed to respond to customer demand and improve overall efficiency. The airport encourages travelers to plan ahead, use the expanded short-term garage options for drop-offs and pickups, and follow posted signage to ensure smoother arrivals and departures for everyone.
