In May 2022, Indonesia removed COVID-19 testing requirements for vaccinated inbound travelers and lifted the outdoor mask mandate. The change was welcomed by hotels and tour operators in tourism-dependent areas such as Bali, which rely heavily on international visitation.

For Ovolo Group, the design-led hospitality brand with properties across Australia and Hong Kong, 2022 presented the ideal moment to debut its first resort in Bali. The new property positions the brand to serve leisure travelers seeking contemporary design, local character and energetic social spaces.
Previously operating as Citadines Kuta Beach Hotel, Mamaka by Ovolo Bali now offers 191 thoughtfully designed rooms and suites alongside a range of inventive food and beverage concepts. Drawing heavily on its island setting, Mamaka blends Ovolo’s global personality with Balinese cultural influences. The name “mamaka” — from the ancient Pali language — conveys affection that extends beyond the self. The resort’s interiors celebrate vibrant colors and traditional Balinese textiles such as kebaya baju, combined with natural materials, woven elements, bold patterns and lantern-inspired lighting.

Guests can choose from several all-day bars and dining venues, including the island’s highest rooftop pool club with sweeping 270-degree views across Bali’s western beaches. Located on Kuta Beach — a popular spot for beginner and recreational surfers — the resort features an on-site surf school and surf shop, a circuit-training mechanical surfboard for core conditioning, a horizontal climbing wall, a wellness center and a unisex salon. These amenities aim to combine active pursuits with relaxation and style.
Mamaka has also introduced a new food and beverage concept designed to reflect the hotel’s playful, modern character and its connection to local flavors and hospitality traditions.

“We didn’t aim for a traditional resort vibe with this property — this is our interpretation of a 2022 resort,” said Girish Jhunjhnuwala, founder and CEO of Ovolo Group. “The hotel is conceived as a playground for travelers, featuring bold food and drink experiences, wellness and activity options, a surf school and shop, and touches of self-indulgence. This urban resort brings fresh energy to Kuta and complements the area’s evolving vibe.”
