Delta Air Lines is undertaking a two-year, $229 million renovation of Terminal 5 at Los Angeles International Airport. Conducted in partnership with the City of Los Angeles and Los Angeles World Airports, the multi-phase project is scheduled for completion in 2015.
Key improvements include doubling the size of the ticketing lobby and expanding federal security screening checkpoints to reduce congestion and improve passenger flow. A private VIP check-in lobby will be created to better serve premium travelers, while the Delta Sky Club will receive a full renovation to modernize lounges and amenities. The baggage system will be upgraded with new carousels to streamline arrivals and reduce wait times.
Concessions are a major focus of the overhaul. Fifteen new restaurants and retail outlets will open in phases throughout the year, showcasing celebrity chefs and well-known retail brands that reflect the food, culture and lifestyle of Los Angeles. These additions aim to give travelers a stronger sense of place and offer a wider range of dining and shopping options before departure.
In addition to the terminal upgrades, Delta recently announced expanded service at LAX. The carrier plans to operate daily year-round and seasonal flights to 14 destinations, adding eight new markets: Anchorage (ANC), Boston (BOS), Bozeman, Mont. (BZN), Nashville (BNA), Seattle (SEA), San Jose, Calif. (SJC), San Jose, Costa Rica (SJO) and Spokane, Wash. (GEG). This route growth complements the Terminal 5 improvements by increasing connectivity and choices for travelers using LAX as a hub.
The Terminal 5 modernization is designed to improve the overall passenger experience through greater capacity, updated amenities and a stronger emphasis on local dining and retail. By upgrading public spaces, security screening, baggage handling and lounge facilities, Delta and its partners aim to create a more efficient and comfortable environment for both domestic and international travelers passing through Los Angeles International Airport.
