Delta Air Lines is testing a biometric boarding pass experience at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport that allows SkyMiles members enrolled in CLEAR to board without presenting a paper or mobile boarding pass or a printed ID.
The pilot is rolling out in phases. Phase one currently lets eligible SkyMiles members use fingerprints as proof of identity to enter the Delta Sky Club instead of showing a boarding pass or hard-copy ID. Phase two will expand that capability so members can use fingerprints to check a bag, check in at Sky Club locations and board flights.
“We’re rapidly moving toward a day when your fingerprint, iris or face will become the only ID you’ll need for any number of transactions throughout a given day,” said Gil West, Delta’s chief operating officer. “We’re excited Delta’s partnership with CLEAR gives us an engine to pioneer this customer experience at the airport.”
Delta says the initiative is part of a larger effort to make travel more convenient and efficient. In recent years the airline has introduced a number of customer-focused innovations, including biometric self-service bag drop, RFID baggage handling, real-time bag tracking, upgraded automated screening lanes and apps that improve onboard operations. The partnership with CLEAR also gives U.S.-based SkyMiles members access to discounted membership and a faster route through security at more than 20 airports.
During the trial, customers who provide a SkyMiles number and are enrolled in CLEAR are eligible to use the biometric boarding experience. CLEAR will link biometric data with SkyMiles information to identify travelers at bag drop, Delta Sky Club entry points and boarding gates. Eligible members can already enter the Sky Club using fingerprints at one of three scanners. Delta plans to extend biometric identification to ticket counter workstations for bag drop, Sky Club desks for entrance verification and gate lanes for boarding. When fully implemented for participating travelers at DCA, fingerprints will replace boarding passes and printed IDs for those eligible.
The carrier emphasizes that the test is limited to enrolled SkyMiles members at Reagan National and will expand only as systems are validated and operational procedures are refined. By focusing on practical uses such as club access, bag drop and boarding, Delta aims to reduce friction at multiple stages of the airport journey while maintaining identity verification standards through the combination of CLEAR enrollment and SkyMiles account linkage.
