Cycling Through South Africa: Epic Routes, Tips & What to Pack

Cape Town has been added to the roster of destinations for Butterfield & Robinson’s cycling tours, offering an engaging active-travel option in South Africa. The South Africa Biking itinerary is rated recreational, with daily rides of 12–21 miles across mostly gently rolling terrain. Occasional climbs add variety, and riders can choose more challenging mountain-bike routes in certain areas.

Optional experiences include fat-biking across the sand dunes of Walker Bay Reserve and mountain-biking the Fynbos Trail winding through the private reserves at Grootbos Forest Lodge. These alternatives provide a mix of coastal, dune and fynbos landscapes for a diverse riding experience.

The six-night, seven-day program highlights private wine tastings and lunches, plus an optional Master Class focused on mountain-biking techniques in the scenic Constantia wine region. Daily routes pass through apple orchards, vineyards and oak forests, and the tour includes a lunch at the award-winning Creation Wine Farm. One memorable day follows the route to Hermanus, riding between the Indian Ocean and dramatic mountain backdrops, while other segments trace paths that lead to Atlantic Coast viewpoints and Green Belt areas.

The departures are scheduled for October. Pricing starts at $7,495 per person, with single supplements beginning at $1,500. Accommodations on the itinerary include Cape Grace in Cape Town, Grootbos Forest Lodge, and the boutique Babylonstoren Farm Hotel in Simondium, a working fruit and wine farm that blends authentic agricultural character with comfortable lodging.
