Celebrate BVI History at the Islands’ Biggest Festival

Enjoy sun, sand and culture this summer in the Caribbean at the British Virgin Islands’ largest celebration, the Emancipation Festival.

Running from July 24 to Aug. 9, the 61st annual festival honors the islands’ ancestors and the emancipation from slavery in 1834, while celebrating local history and cultural traditions. This important event draws BVI residents and visitors alike to reflect on the past and enjoy vibrant community festivities.

Events take place across Tortola, including Road Town Village, East End and Carrot Bay. Residents and tourists can expect a mix of pageants, parades, boat races and street performances that showcase the territory’s heritage and community spirit.

The festival opens with The Rise and Shine Tramp and live musical performances from local bands, then continues with a full schedule of parties, cultural events and colorful parades. Expect native dances, elaborate costumes and traditional music throughout the program.

If you’re planning a visit, check local listings and official tourism sources for the latest schedule and event details to make the most of the festival experience.
