Carnival Cruise Line teamed up with Operation Homefront to host the world’s first social media–driven barbecue for service members at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego.
Members of the military enjoyed a summer cookout where burger buns were personalized with messages of thanks using a specialized culinary laser printer. Carnival invited the public to share their appreciation by posting messages on social media with the hashtag #ThankYouBurger. Submitted messages were sent to the grill, laser-printed onto buns, and served to the troops as part of the event.
“We wanted to create a way for Americans to connect with the military and express gratitude for their service over the July 4th holiday,” said William Burke, chief maritime officer for Carnival. “We all want the troops to know how grateful we — and our country — are for protecting our freedom, and this social media–powered barbecue offered a memorable way to say thank you.”
As part of the partnership, Carnival donated $25,000 to Operation Homefront to support efforts that strengthen military families. The barbecue reflects Carnival’s ongoing commitment to the organization, which previously included hosting hundreds of military family members aboard the cruise line’s newest ship, Carnival Vista, last year.
The event combined innovative technology, public participation, and a simple communal meal to honor service members. By leveraging social media, Carnival and Operation Homefront created a direct and visible way for civilians to share short messages of encouragement and appreciation that were transformed into a tangible gesture—personally marked buns served at the cookout.
Beyond the immediate celebration, the donation and continued partnership underscore a broader effort to support military families’ stability and well-being. Organizations such as Operation Homefront provide essential resources, and corporate partners like Carnival amplify their reach through financial support and public events that raise awareness and bring communities together.
Events like this also highlight how everyday activities—like a barbecue—can be turned into meaningful opportunities to acknowledge the sacrifices of service members. The combination of technology, social engagement, and a philanthropic contribution created a memorable Fourth of July observance that recognized troops while encouraging civilians to participate in acts of gratitude.
