Carnival Cruise Faces New Engine Problems Disrupting Passengers

In what felt like a real-life echo of the 1993 film Groundhog Day, another cruise ship was forced to evacuate passengers after a mechanical malfunction.

More than 1,000 guests aboard the Carnival Dream were flown out of St. Maarten on Friday via charter flights operated by Delta Air Lines. An additional 1,400 passengers were scheduled to depart on Saturday.

The incident followed a failure of the ship’s backup generator during routine testing on Thursday. The malfunction adds to a series of recent technical problems across the cruise line: weeks earlier, a fire in a generator room left passengers on the Carnival Triumph stranded for several days, and separate propulsion and steering issues forced the Carnival Legend to limp into port.
