Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport, which recently handled record passenger volumes, is undergoing a $60 million expansion.
The state of Maryland is investing to accommodate growing demand. Governor Larry Hogan announced that the airport’s international Concourse E will increase by 70,000 square feet across three levels. The project adds six new gates, upgraded restrooms, and expanded operational support areas, along with renovations to an existing 20,000 square feet. Two of the new gates will be full-service and four will be designated for arrivals only. Concourse E serves international carriers such as British Airways, Condor, Norwegian and WOW air.
“BWI continues to set records and this expansion highlights the continued success of our airport, as well as Maryland’s flourishing economy,” said Governor Hogan. “This expansion will create new job opportunities for hardworking Marylanders, while bringing greater ease and efficiency to international travel, tourism and trade.”
The new gates are expected to be operational by the end of summer 2018. This is the international terminal’s second recent expansion. The earlier project, completed in November 2016, added an eight-lane security checkpoint, new food and retail options, a secure connector between Concourses D and E, and reconfigured gates to support additional international service. In 2016, BWI set a passenger record with 25.1 million travelers.
