Burbank Airport Renamed: What the Bob Hope Change Means for Travelers

Southern California’s Bob Hope Airport has officially reverted to the name Hollywood Burbank Airport, dropping the moniker that honored the late comedian and film star. The change aims to make the airport’s location clearer for travelers and to reduce confusion with other Southern California airports.

Originally opened in 1930 as United Airport, the facility has operated under several names over the decades, including Hollywood-Burbank Airport and Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport. Returning to the Hollywood Burbank Airport name reflects the airport’s regional identity and helps distinguish it from larger hubs in the Los Angeles area.

The renaming process is expected to be completed this summer. While the airport’s website already shows the updated name, the web address remains the same for now: bobhopeairport.com.

Hollywood Burbank Airport serves as one of the regional alternatives to the busier Los Angeles International Airport, offering travelers a convenient option for accessing the San Fernando Valley, Burbank, Glendale and nearby communities. To accommodate growing demand and modernize facilities, voters approved a $400 million plan that includes replacing the original 1930s-era terminal with a contemporary 14-gate terminal.

Construction on the new terminal is planned to deliver improved passenger amenities, streamlined security and expanded gate capacity. The modern facility is scheduled to open in 2022, providing a significant upgrade to the airport’s infrastructure while maintaining the convenient location that makes Hollywood Burbank a popular choice for business and leisure travelers.

By restoring the Hollywood Burbank Airport name and investing in a new terminal, local leaders and airport officials aim to strengthen the airport’s identity, improve the passenger experience and better serve the surrounding communities for years to come.
