One of the newest entrants in the premium cruise segment, Azamara Club Cruises operates two small luxury ships: the Azamara Journey and the Azamara Quest. Each boutique vessel carries roughly 700 guests, and their compact size allows them to visit ports that larger resort ships cannot. Azamara’s focus on destination-rich itineraries and its habit of offering late-evening and overnight stays set it apart, giving passengers more time to explore both popular and off-the-beaten-path locations. These extended dockings are especially appealing on longer sailings through Northern Europe, the Mediterranean and the Arabian Gulf, as well as across the Caribbean, Oceania and Asia.
Both ships underwent comprehensive refurbishments in early 2016, resulting in meticulously maintained vessels equipped with modern amenities, including improved internet connectivity. Interiors evoke the elegant feel of a 1930s ocean liner, combined with attentive service that creates a relaxed, country-club ambiance. Staterooms are relatively compact but thoughtfully appointed, most offering private balconies and basic butler service. After the 2016 upgrades, spa suites were added that feature rain showers and outdoor soaking tubs.
Onboard dining emphasizes quality and flexibility. While Azamara’s two specialty restaurants charge a surcharge for most guests (suite guests are typically exempt), tipping is not required and complimentary coffee, tea, standard wines, beers and spirits are available in many venues. Open-seating restaurants consistently deliver high-standard cuisine; even the poolside grill now offers table service and candlelit alfresco dining. The onboard Steiner Leisure spa provides salon and fitness facilities, plus specialty offerings such as acupuncture. Additional amenities include self-service laundries, a casino, cabaret entertainment and a golf net.
Azamara’s itineraries are designed to deepen the travel experience. The line has partnered with conservation organizations to bring expert speakers aboard, focusing on wildlife preservation and environmental issues. The cruise line also offers extended shore excursions called Overnight Adventures, which allow guests to venture inland and rejoin the ship at a later port. Examples include touring the ancient temples of Bagan during a Myanmar voyage or spending a night in the desert as part of a Bedouin experience in Oman.
Azamara periodically offers standout sailings that highlight its destination-first approach. In 2018 the line planned its longest voyage to date: a 102-day World Journey from Sydney to London calling on 60 ports across 29 countries, featuring multiple late-night and overnight calls and a variety of special events along the route, from cultural evenings to unique local presentations. Another notable chartered cruise featured the Azamara Quest operating an adults-only, clothing-optional Adriatic voyage with themed onboard programming. These special itineraries illustrate Azamara’s commitment to immersive travel and to creating distinctive experiences for passengers seeking intimate, destination-focused cruising.
