Avenue Hotel Chicago: Boutique Stay Steps from Magnificent Mile

Arrival/Check-in: I arrived with plans to quickly drop my bag and head to the McCormick Center, hoping to complete the full check-in later. The front desk, however, proceeded with the standard check-in process, so about 15 minutes later I was fully checked in and on my way. When I returned that evening, the staff promptly retrieved my luggage from storage. (26/30)

Guest Quarters: I stayed in a one-bedroom corner suite that offered generous space and very good skyline views. The living area included a couch, coffee table, large TV on a substantial stand, and a desk that provided a comfortable workspace. Complimentary wireless Internet made it easy to work, though the room could have used better lighting. A short hallway separated the living area from the bedroom, with the bathroom located off that hall. The bathroom was compact but provided sufficient counter space. The bedroom matched the living room in size and featured a king bed, TV, nightstands, and a large, tucked-away closet. Floor-to-ceiling windows along much of the bedroom walls brought in ample natural light and showcased the view. (27/30)

Services/Amenities: The hotel’s 40th-floor SKY Lounge offers a European-style continental breakfast each morning and serves cocktails and tapas in the evening, all accompanied by striking views. Elephant and Castle Restaurant & Pub on the lobby level is a popular dining option for both guests and locals, though it operates independently of the hotel. Fitness amenities include a seventh-floor gym and a rooftop pool. The hotel’s location is very convenient—within easy walking distance of the Magnificent Mile and many Chicago landmarks. Business travelers will appreciate the tech rooms equipped with iMac computers, while families may enjoy the themed children’s rooms (these are in high demand, so reserve early). Note that several floors house outside businesses, including medical offices, which can create heavy traffic in the lobby and elevator areas. (38/40)

The Experience: Since Driftwood Hotels renovated the property and rebranded it as The Avenue, the hotel has a refreshed feel, though some signs of the building’s age remain in the guestrooms. My stay was comfortable overall. The Avenue may not be the most luxurious option in Chicago, but it delivers solid amenities and convenience, making it a practical choice for business travelers and visitors who want a well-located, comfortable base.
