Arley Hall & Gardens: Award-Winning Historic Estate and Grounds

Downton Abbey fans should add Arley Hall & Gardens to their travel list. This classic English manor in Cheshire, in the northwest of England, has been the Ashbrook family home since the 15th century. The current Hall, built in the Jacobethan style between 1832 and 1845 on the site of the original 1469 house, has appeared in numerous film and television productions, including the British series The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (ITV Granada).

Inside the Hall, visitors can see rooms furnished and decorated in 19th-century style. Highlights include a grand Elizabethan staircase, a formal library, an art gallery, a drawing room and The Emperor’s Room, named after Napoleon III who stayed there during the winter of 1847–1848. The preserved interiors offer a genuine sense of period life without feeling staged.

Outside, the gardens are a primary attraction and are regarded among Britain and Europe’s finest. One standout is the long, dense Herbaceous Border, believed to be among the earliest of its kind planted in England. The landscape also features an avenue of lime trees and notable evergreen Quercus ilex (holm oak). The estate includes an eight-acre formal garden, a six-acre Woodland Walk and The Grove, a quieter area crisscrossed by paths and scattered with sculptures, including a flock of sheep woven from willow by artist Juliette Hamilton.

Visitors often take a break at The Gardener’s Kitchen café, which serves lunch, teas and seasonal refreshments. Programming varies through the year: the Walled Garden Theatre hosts performances, there are watercolor workshops and, occasionally, guests receive a personal welcome from the current Lord and Lady Ashbrook. The estate publishes opening dates, hours and special events on its official website.

Arley Hall & Gardens offers a richly layered experience: architectural history inside the Hall, horticultural excellence across its grounds and a calendar of cultural activities that make each visit unique. Whether you come for period interiors, renowned garden design or simply a peaceful walk through centuries-old landscape, Arley provides an authentic slice of English country life.
