American Airlines will raise its onboard beverage prices by $1 starting Oct. 1. The change applies to most alcoholic drinks purchased in the Main Cabin: beer will increase to $8, while wine and spirits will be $9. Passengers seated in first class, business class and Main Cabin Extra will continue to receive complimentary alcoholic beverages, and all non-alcoholic drinks remain free in every cabin.
Alongside the price increase, American says it has expanded its drink selection. New beer offerings include Goose Island and Fat Tire. Spirits additions feature Tito’s vodka and Woodford Reserve whiskey. Wine choices listed by the airline include La Noria Tempranillo Cabernet Sauvignon, Les Papillons Grenache Rosé and La Montagne Noire Sauvignon Blanc.
Earlier this year, Southwest Airlines also adjusted its onboard drink pricing: beer and wine now cost $6 and spirits are $7. To date, other major carriers have not announced similar price increases.
Travelers should consider these changes when budgeting for in-flight purchases, especially on longer flights where buying drinks might be more desirable. If you prefer complimentary service, check your ticket class or loyalty status before you fly to confirm whether drinks are included with your fare.
