American Airlines Names Plane for World’s Longest-Serving Mechanic

American Airlines honored a longtime employee by dedicating one of its Boeing 777-200 aircraft to a mechanic who has served the company for 75 years. The dedication took place during a ceremony at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport.

Azreil “Al” Blackman began his career with American Airlines in 1942 as a 16-year-old sheet metal apprentice, earning $0.50 an hour. His service has been recognized by Guinness World Records as the longest career for an airline mechanic. The aircraft dedication was kept a surprise for Blackman.

“Al has worked on nearly every aircraft American has flown, from the flying boats of the 1940s to today’s Boeing 777s,” said Doug Parker, CEO of American Airlines. “His dedication to training and mentoring others and to maintaining our fleet safely has made us a better airline.”

The dedicated 777 bears Blackman’s signature and includes interior elements painted in his honor.

At the ceremony, Blackman reflected on his long career: “I’m honored to be here, and I’m proud to be a mechanic. I’m proud to be part of the American Airlines team. When you love what you do, it doesn’t feel like work.”
