American Airlines has launched a $1.6 billion renovation of Los Angeles International Airport’s Terminals 4 and 5, marking the carrier’s largest single investment at an airport in its history.
Terminals 4 and 5 are LAX’s busiest domestic terminals. The redevelopment is designed to deliver a modernized passenger experience, featuring more efficient check-in and security areas, upgraded technology, and increased seating throughout the terminals.
Current work focuses on reconfiguring the Terminal 5 ticketing lobby to create a new structure between Terminals 4 and 5. That new facility will provide elevators, escalators, and stair access for passengers using the Automated People Mover, improving circulation and connections between terminals and ground transportation.
Additional benefits of the project include improved access to public transit, an energy-efficient departure hall that supports sustainability goals, and 16 lanes dedicated to security screening to reduce wait times. Travelers will also see modernized signage, more power outlets across concourses, and an expanded selection of dining and retail options.
“The improvements included in the lease agreement between Los Angeles World Airports and American Airlines are ones that go to the heart of the guest experience,” said Deborah Flint, CEO of Los Angeles World Airports. “By working together with our airline partners as we reimagine our airport, we will transform LAX into the gold-standard airport that this city deserves.”
Overall, the project aims to streamline passenger flow, enhance comfort, and bring contemporary amenities to the high-traffic terminals. With construction staged to minimize disruptions, travelers can expect phased improvements that progressively introduce new services and facilities. The investment underscores both American Airlines’ commitment to its Los Angeles operations and LAX’s broader efforts to modernize and improve the passenger experience across the airport.
