Natural Habitat Adventures, a leader in sustainable ecotourism and the conservation travel partner of World Wildlife Fund, has added the Alaska Bear Camp to its roster of trips. Operating from Homer, Alaska, this four-night, five-day expedition runs May 24–Aug. 23 and offers an immersive look at one of the most iconic species of the North.
This experience centers on Alaska’s brown bears, combining responsible wildlife viewing with active conservation efforts to protect vital habitat. Guests will have exceptional opportunities to observe bears at close range in a natural setting while supporting ongoing preservation work for the species.

“The camp’s location makes it unique enough, but what is truly special is the presence of brown bears—lots of them,” said Ben Bressler, founder and president of Natural Habitat Adventures. “It’s an extraordinary experience available to very few, and our being there is important to the future of the bears, which continue to face potential threats from mining, oil and gas development.”
The journey begins with a chartered bush plane flight over Cook Inlet, a scenic approach that showcases glaciers, snow-capped volcanoes and expansive coastal landscapes. The plane lands on the beach adjacent to the camp, which occupies a 20-acre parcel of private land within Lake Clark National Park.

Alaska is home to nearly 95 percent of the United States’ brown bear population, and Lake Clark National Park provides critical habitat supported by abundant salmon runs. The camp’s position within this landscape means bears regularly appear along the shoreline and in nearby meadows, allowing for consistent, respectful viewing opportunities from camp.
The camp combines wilderness authenticity with modern comforts. It accommodates up to 14 guests in spacious, weatherproof tent cabins set on raised decks, each equipped with a heater. Comfortable beds and hot showers are available in a shared bathhouse, ensuring warmth and comfort after long days outdoors. Meals are prepared by the resident chef, who highlights fresh local seafood and regional ingredients to create satisfying daily menus.
This program balances adventure and stewardship: guests experience the raw beauty of Alaska and its wildlife while contributing to efforts that protect brown bear habitat and the ecological systems they depend on. For travelers seeking an intimate, educational wildlife encounter with minimal environmental impact, the Alaska Bear Camp offers a rare and carefully managed opportunity to witness brown bears in one of the species’ most important strongholds.
