Alaska Airlines announced last month it will expand service between Sacramento (SMF) and Kona (KOA) on Hawai‘i’s Big Island. The new nonstop route launches Dec. 20 and will be the only direct flight linking the two cities. Service is scheduled three times weekly. Alaska already operates nonstop flights from Sacramento to Maui (OGG).
Alaska Airlines operates more flights between the U.S. West Coast and Hawai‘i than any other carrier, averaging about 29 daily departures from 10 West Coast gateways, including Los Angeles (LAX), Sacramento (SMF), San Diego (SAN), San Francisco (SFO), San Jose (SJC) and Oakland (OAK).
“We know our customers love Hawaii, even in sunny California,” said John Kirby, vice president at Alaska Airlines. “That’s a big reason we’re excited to add this new connection between Northern California and the Big Island. This new route reflects Alaska’s ongoing commitment to growth and investment across the West Coast.”
Mark Haneke, manager of Sacramento International Airport, added that the expanded service is welcome news for local travelers. “We’re pleased that Alaska Airlines is expanding its service to Hawaii from Sacramento,” Haneke said. “This new service to Kona is our airport’s first scheduled nonstop to the Big Island and broadens the selection of direct island routes available from Sacramento.”
The new Sacramento–Kona link provides more convenient travel options for Northern California residents and visitors heading to Hawai‘i’s Big Island. Travelers can expect a straightforward nonstop schedule that complements Alaska’s existing island routes, making it easier to plan both short getaways and longer vacations without connections.
With this seasonal expansion, Alaska continues to strengthen its presence in the Pacific market, offering increased frequency and connectivity between key West Coast cities and Hawaiian destinations. The addition of Sacramento–Kona service underscores the airline’s strategy to meet demand for leisure travel while enhancing nonstop choices for customers based in Northern California.
Passengers interested in the new route should check Alaska Airlines’ schedules and fare options for the Dec. 20 launch and subsequent weekly departures. As always, travelers are advised to confirm flight times and travel requirements ahead of booking and departure.
