Al Fresco Dining at The Rittenhouse Philadelphia: Where to Eat Outdoors

Philadelphia luxury hotel The Rittenhouse has unveiled a refreshed dining and cocktail experience in its newly redesigned outdoor courtyard. Open to both hotel guests and local residents, The Courtyard at The Rittenhouse is located on the lobby level and offers light bites and handcrafted cocktails in an elegant, historically inspired setting. The design retains original architectural features—arched doorways and windows, faux balustrades and classical sculptures—while new landscaping and contemporary accents create a relaxed urban oasis. Three river birch trees and three honey locust trees in minimalist containers add height and shade to the seating area, while seasonal floral arrangements accent the archways. The courtyard concept was developed by landscape design firm Terrain.

The menu highlights refreshing summer cocktails paired with small plates crafted for sharing. Examples include octopus with sunflower hummus and apricot; pork rillettes with pickled mustard seed and toast; Thai garlic sausage with cucumber and peanut; fingerling potatoes topped with nori and bonito flakes; zucchini chips served with crab dip; and salmon tartare flavored with lemongrass and radishes. The Courtyard also hosts an Oyster Hour from 4–7 p.m., featuring $1 oysters and $5 sangria, ideal for a casual early evening outing.

Food and beverage service in The Courtyard is available daily from 4–10 p.m., weather permitting. The space remains open later for cocktails only: from 10 p.m. to midnight Sunday through Thursday, and until 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday, providing a comfortable place to relax after an evening in the city.

The Courtyard’s combination of classic Philadelphia architecture, contemporary landscape design and a menu of approachable yet refined small plates makes it a versatile destination—suitable for a relaxed afternoon drink, a pre-dinner cocktail, or a late-night gathering. Its location on the lobby level ensures easy access for hotel guests, while the open, inviting layout welcomes locals looking for a tranquil urban retreat.
