Air Canada and Air China Launch New Nonstop Beijing–Montreal Route

Air China and Air Canada are preparing to launch nonstop service between Beijing (PEK) and Montreal (YUL). Air China will operate the new route beginning Sept. 29 using a Boeing 777-300ER, initially flying three times per week. This will be the first direct trans-Pacific link connecting Montreal and Asia.

Both carriers plan a phased approach. The initial phase establishes the scheduled nonstop flights. In a second phase, subject to regulatory approvals, the airlines aim to form a comprehensive revenue-sharing joint venture to support the long-term viability of the Beijing–Montreal service and encourage sustained traffic growth.

The two airlines previously signed a memorandum of understanding in November 2014 that outlined principles for an integrated revenue-sharing joint venture. That MOU set the framework for an enhanced partnership on routes between China and Canada, with the goal of stimulating passenger and cargo traffic between the two countries. Pending the necessary approvals, the joint venture was expected to be implemented in the second half of 2015.

The direct Beijing–Montreal flights provide passengers with a convenient nonstop option for travel between eastern Canada and Asia, offering improved connectivity for business and leisure travelers. Operating with a widebody Boeing 777-300ER, the service is designed to meet demand on this long-haul trans-Pacific corridor while aligning schedules and resources between the two carriers.

Establishing this route reflects both airlines’ strategic focus on growing trans-Pacific networks and enhancing bilateral connectivity. If approved, the planned joint venture would allow Air China and Air Canada to coordinate schedules, pricing and marketing more closely, potentially creating a more seamless travel experience for passengers through joint revenue management and shared customer benefits.

As the route commences and partnership plans advance, travelers may see expanded options and improved flight frequencies over time. Regulatory review and final approvals remain necessary before the revenue-sharing agreement can take effect, but the initial nonstop service marks a significant step in strengthening air links between China and Canada and in connecting Montreal directly to Asian markets.
