Adults-Only Cruise Ships See Rising Demand as Travel Returns

Cruises remain one of the most inclusive vacation choices and are often seen as an ideal option for multigenerational travel. They bring everyone together under one floating roof, offering something for every age group — from infants to seniors.

As cruising has recovered after the pandemic, demand has risen for adults-only experiences at sea. More travelers now look for cruise lines that require passengers to be 18 or older, seeking an environment designed specifically for adults across the whole ship.

“There’s a noticeable increase in demand for adults-only cruises,” says Henley Vazquez, cofounder of Fora Travel, a tech-forward travel agency in the Virtuoso network. While adults-only options appeal to a wide age range, Fora Travel sees particularly strong interest among younger adult travelers.

“Many travelers who previously dismissed cruising as geared toward baby boomers now find it a fun, modern and inclusive way to travel,” Vazquez adds.

Many major cruise lines offer adults-only relaxation areas — for example, Norwegian Cruise Line and Disney Cruise Line provide adult-only spaces onboard — yet fully adults-only ships are still uncommon. Virgin Voyages, launched in 2021, openly targets the 18-and-older market with itineraries across the Caribbean, Mediterranean and beyond.

Virgin’s marketing puts the adults-only promise front and center, describing its ships as a grown-up playground where absence of children enhances the experience. The line appeals to its target demographic (roughly 34–62) with activities such as drag queen brunches and playful cabin features like hammock-style balconies, drawing honeymooners and younger adults seeking a lively, age-focused atmosphere.

Viking also enforces an 18-and-up policy across its ocean and river fleet, though its typical guest profile skews older, often 55 and up. Viking focuses on enrichment, offering onboard lecture series and shore excursions centered on history, architecture and culture, making it a strong choice for travelers seeking an educational cruise experience.

There are even more specialized adults-only niches, such as clothing-optional cruises operating in the Caribbean, Mediterranean and South Pacific. Operators that charter mainstream ships for clothing-optional itineraries cater specifically to passengers who prefer that style of travel.

Still, Vazquez advises travelers to remain open-minded. “Choice of cruise often comes down to the destinations adults want to visit,” she notes. For many regions, exploring by ship is simply the best way to experience them, regardless of whether the vessel is strictly adults-only.

SAGA CRUISES
British operator Saga Cruises takes the adults-only concept further by catering exclusively to passengers 50 and older. With two 999-passenger ships based in the United Kingdom, Saga sails itineraries to destinations such as Norway, Spain’s Atlantic coast and the Canary Islands, designed for mature travelers who prefer a serene, age-specific atmosphere.

VIRGIN VOYAGES
Virgin Voyages markets itself as an adults-only cruise line and has quickly established a reputation among couples and younger cruisers. Its ships, including Scarlet Lady and Valiant Lady, sail Caribbean and Mediterranean itineraries from ports such as Miami, Athens and Barcelona. Virgin’s brand emphasizes lively onboard programming and modern amenities tailored to adults, and the line has expanded its fleet with additional ships planned to serve routes in the Australasian region and beyond.
